Solar power in New York

New York has an array of solar incentives available to the home and business owner looking to go solar.

The Empire State can be regarded as a Solar Friendly State and runs a close second to Massachusetts for the best state in America in which to install solar panels for your home.

We rank New York as #1 for local solar incentives and # 3 overall for the attractiveness of installing solar panels.

The combination of Net Metering, the 30% federal solar tax credit, some first-class state based incentives, and having one of the highest utility power costs in the nation makes solar a great investment for your home in the Empire State.

Best brands of solar panels

To find the best brands of solar panels you can use America's most trusted solar panel comparison and reviews website, SolarReviews.

However, reviews of solar panels can be a bit meaningless because most consumer owners have not had any issues and so whilst solar company reviews are very important when choosing solar installers they are of less use when choosing solar panels.

What rebates, solar tax credits and other solar incentives are available in New York?

New York State Solar Tax Credit

The State of New York offers a state based tax credit for new solar generation systems up to 25kW in size or a maximum value of $5000.

his is great for those with a tax bill but not so much for low income earners. However at least NY has incentives for both groups of people, very nice New York.

The NY-Sun PV incentive program is a utility based solar incentive that provides rebates that are currently up to $400 per Kilowatt (1kW) of an installed system ( up to a maximum system size of 25kW)

The way this incentive is done in that there is a capacity allocation for each utility. This capacity allocation is broken up into bands with an incentive amount falling as capacity is reached in each band and the program moves onto the next band.

The upfront incentive is now finished in the Long Island power territories but other incentives still apply in this area.

As at April 2017 the Con Edison power territory and the Upstate power territory are both currently in Block 7 meaning there is an incentive amount of $0.40 per watt ($400 per kilowatt)

Thats HUGE, so a 5kW (5000 watt solar system) is entitled to a $2000 rebate.

It just gets better folks, the State also runs the Affordable Solar program where they double the size of the rebate if your income level qualifies you for the program.

You might want to hurry on this program as it appears to be seen as too generous and is expected to be cut.

Solar installers will typically arrange the paperwork and take the value of the rebate from the total cost of the solar system, but homeowners can still arrange this themselves if they prefer.

What are the pros and cons of buying solar panels for your home in New York

The advantages of installing solar panels is there is both state based incentives and the federal tax credit. In addition New York also has expensive power meaning overall the return on investment for an installation of residential solar panels in New York is one of the best in the nation.

The disadvantage of installing solar panels is that there is less overall solar irradiation in New York per year and so a solar system, produces less than it would in some other areas. However, the local incentives more than make up for this and I think New York home owners will be kicking themselves they didn't install solar panels while these generous incentives are around.
