In addition to state or utility rebates, homeowners can often take advantage of state tax credits (or deductions) towards the net total cost of a PV system. However, there is usually a maximum credit/deduction allowed. If your tax credit/deduction is greater than the amount of tax you owe, in most states the balance will not be refunded to you. However, any credit/deduction amount in excess of the tax due can be carried over, usually for a maximum of up to five years.
